Wind Element! (Last Time I Swear, I Hope)

I know this is a horrible thing as a fan, consumer and frankly as a human being to say but I’m genuinely just looking forward to the next arcade/portable/spin-off Monster Hunter game. You can keep your fancy graphics and muted environments, I’ll gladly take the smooth gameplay and vibrant zones. I’ve been playing SunRise again and it is just leaps and bounds more enjoyable than Wilds for me. I probably will still get the Wilds G-rank expansion game and maybe it’ll be better, Rise was kind of just okay and then Sunbreak came and just made everything so much better. I’m gonna be super pissed if they actually put in some of my boys I’ve been crying and bitching about in the Wilds expansion though. Soooo I’m going to bring up wind element monsters again, boss fights and revisiting old areas.

I’m hoping this is the last time I talk about this, I thought I’ve already gone into this more but according to my glossary I haven’t gone as in depth as I think? So maybe I did some place but I can’t find it. Some of this will probably be reiterating but again, hopefully this will be the last time I bring this up. Wind as an element, why is that such a controversial idea? There’s plenty of wind based monsters to warrant it as its own element. A lot of wind type monsters’ weapons get labeled with water and ice because wind is cold and wet I guess? Kushala Daora for instance. But we’ve got things like Paolumu, floaty squirrel guy, he shoots wind. Nibelsnarf likes to blow air at you but his weapons are water based, why? Does its saliva count enough to be a water attack? There’s plenty of monsters I think could fit in this category, Kushala Daora, Paolumu and Nibelsnarf (his weaposn are so cool also!) as I’ve mentioned plus the Sand Barioth, Tigerstripe Zamtrios, Nargacuga and even the Qurupeco could fit in there. I never got to fight the Tigerstripe Zamtrios but I’m assuming its attacks are similar to the regular Zamtrios but it’s in the desert. From what I gather it’s weapons are paralysis based, it could be changed to wind. The Nargacuga also has some attacks where it literarily shoots air blades at you, which could translate to a wind weapon. Soooo yeah, is that it? Is that all I really had to say? Maybe that’s why I think I’ve written this up before? I think I have more to say but I don’t so I just delete it. Well I wrote it this time, fuck you. What is there really to say? Wind is an element in most things, these monsters use wind based attacks therefore wind element in Monster Hunter, bingo-bango.

In my other recent Monster Hunter post I talked about the Gogmazios fight and to no ones surprise my opinion wasn’t well received. I think my stance on these “rare” and powerful elder dragons comes from just the games I played growing up. I mean games still do this but it was the norm back in the day where you had a boss, you fought it and that was that, no more boss, you want to fight it again well then I guess you need to start the game over. That’s how I feel with these end game elder dragons, I don’t want to farm them or even think we should be able to. Gogmazios in Wilds for instance has an ancient railgun glued to its back which you can knock off and use against it. It’s a cool concept and mechanic for the fight but after you beat this one and you go out to fight him again is it another super rare elder dragon with a railgun inexplicably glued to its back as well? I just think some of these fights should be a once and done kind of thing or maybe it’s a quest that comes around every so often so you can replay it or there just isn’t any rewards for it or weapons or armor to craft from it. Or maybe you tell the smithy “I want a gunlance from this” and that’s what you get as a reward and that’s it. I dunno, again, not popular at all, people like to farm the things and get all their armor and weapons because something is broken in their brain.

I was thinking recently that it would be cool if Capcom revisited some of the older Monster Hunter zones but pieced them together like the modern games. So instead of having the areas of say the Deserted Island from MH3U where you load into each zone it was just a big open map. I would like to see some of these zones as a full map to explore.

That’s really it I guess. Something else semi-related as far as World/Wilds is concerned; The Evangelion man recently said something about Japanese anime studios shouldn’t adapt to Western audiences but we should adapt to them and he’s absolutely right. I think it can apply to games as well, your audience will find you. I understand games cost a lot and studios want to appeal to as many people as possible to make the most money possible but they should cut it out. Stop spending so much, stop trying to put every game mechanic known to man in one game, stay in your lane and make it as good as you possibly can. I saw a video recently from RageGamingVideos talking about the inevitable Wilds expansion and what they’re hopes and dreams and they predict that the game will come out next February-ish. I personally think with all this “Capcom broke the emergency glass, put Gemma in a bikini now!” and putting out title updates before they really wanted to makes me think we’ll see it before the end of the year.

So what are your thoughts? I don’t think they’ll put introduce wind element monsters and weapons in a “spin-off” game but if it doesn’t happen in the next iteration of games I’ll just assume it’ll never happen. Let me know your thoughts and I’ll be back sometime. Bye-bye.

Talim from Soul Calibur. Get it, cause she's got something to do with wind... I just remember using her and the first thing she says before a match is "Wind." I think Soul Cal characters would make good monster hunters.
