Unfinished Games
Hello! The other night I had a dream that the first generation Pokemon games came to the Switch 2, most likely in the online subscription service. It wasn’t necessarily “Red/Blue/Yellow” because you had the options to make the game either look like it did in Red where the background was red and the characters and sprites were green/blue or the opposite in Blue or change it to be more colorful like Yellow or a few other color combinations. It was a pretty sick dream. A day or two after, Kit and Krista talked on their podcast that if Pokemon was going to re-release Red/Blue/Yellow that this was the year to do it and if they don’t then it will probably never happen, it being Red and Blue’s 30th anniversary this year. Anyway, I’m here to talk about my endless backlog of unfinished games.
I had wanted to finish Silksong and Metroid Prime 4 and then maybe give Armored Core 6 another go but I’ve kind of lost interest in doing that. I remember years ago I was kind of in this same slump. I feel like it was when Rise of the Tomb Raider came out that I was kind of playing all kinds of AAA games because I felt like I had to and not because I wanted to, it felt like a chore that I was supposed to accomplish rather than something to enjoy playing. I still do want to finish Silksong, I have gotten past a lot of parts that were giving me problems just by having a little patience but what is holding me back now is that I would play it on break at work on my Steam Deck but work has been really pissing me off and I thought it was better to not to play something agitating during break.
I was looking at all these Nintendo games I have that I haven’t finished; Mario Wonder, Zelda Echoes of Wisdom, Pokemon Legends ZA, Metroid Prime 4, Donkey Kong Bananza, Fire Emblem Engage… Fire Emblem Three Houses. I just, I don’t know, there’s just like nothing in these games that makes me want to continue, there’s no driving force behind what I’m doing. Mario Wonder is really wild, there’s new stuff left, right and sideways but it just hasn’t done anything for me. There’s a handful of returning enemies but there are a TON of new baddies which should be exciting but it just does nothing for me. I usually can play through a Super Mario game no problem but I’m just not interested in Wonder. I feel like Metroid Prime 4 doesn’t know what it wanted to be. It starts of with a space station and space pirates then Samus gets transported some place else and she’s just kind of find with it. Even after meeting MacKenzie there’s no “Where am I? Why is the Federation here?” it’s just business as usual for Samus. Well, forget whatever all that was, time to help this planet. Donkey Kong Bananza is just very mindless to me. That’s not exactly a bad thing, it is nice sometimes to just shut your brain off and play a game but I guess I need more than a big sandbox. Pokemon ZA, can’t get into it. Fire Emblem Three Houses and Engage, can’t get into them. I don’t like all the down time in those games. After every mission you have to run around and talk to everyone, do some other mini tasks, I don’t enjoy it. I just want to play the game part, I don’t need a life sim in the middle. The other thing that bothered me in Engage especially is the characters are so mismatched; they don’t look like they belong in the same universe let alone the same game. And when you go into cutscenes when the characters are talking with one another it’s so bland. There’s nothing really around in the background as far as landscape, you don’t really see the other characters together and their movements are just odd.
I knew I might not really care for Bananza but a lot of these other games I thought I’d finish them. Maybe eventually I will but it makes me wonder about future games. I’m hoping the new Fire Emblem is good, Fortuen’s Weave. I’m hoping this 10th gen Pokemon game is good too, I didn’t care much for Scarlet/Violet, I didn’t play the DLC and I remember not liking Sword/Shield too much but the DLC was really good I thought. I think the whole school setting is what I didn’t like with Scarlet/Violet so maybe if they get away from that it will be better for me. It’s still one of those things too where these Nintendo games are made more for kids so maybe that’s why I’m not interested or maybe I’m just not in the mood right now? I’ve got a plethora of other non-Nintendo games I haven’t finished also. Forbidden West, Assassin’s Creed Shadows (I don’t think that’s going to happen), I haven’t even started FF7 Rebirth (bought it, installed it, never played it), Doom: The Dark Ages… I’m a menace. (Edit: Just glanced at my Steam and saw Pirate Yakuza, that's another one. Darksiders technically I guess, Hellblade 2...)
So yeah, do you have a list of uncompleted games as well or is it just me? Are there any of these games that I should sit down with and finish? Are you genuinely excited for any upcoming game I should know about so I can ignore my backlog? Let me know with a comment and I’ll be back some day, bye-bye!
Random image I found. I don't think the intent is what I'm using it for but it works. Could just edit the "nintendo" for "me."
