My Ideal Pokemon Game 2
Hello? H-how are you? I’m gonna talk about shit I’ve already talked about before if that’s okay :3 Don’t hate me >< Okay enough of that.
SO! Been playing Hyrule Warriors DE and damn does that run good on the Switch 2! It’s absurd how much content that game has. But when I’m on the adventure map, looking at the tiles, being told “Requires Search” and having to figure out which item card to use and where just made me think “Man, I really want a good Pokemon game.” I’m getting a clearer image of what I want, what I’d like, if only I can convey it clearly. I’ve probably mentioned most of this in other posts but I’m gonna say it again and hopefully this will be the last time and I can just point to this post if anything comes up in the future. So thusly, I’m not too interested in Pokemon Legends ZA. It just looks like more battling and I’m very much over that. Recently Game Freak released a trailer for a different game they’re working on (that just looks like Wild Hearts basically) and from the trailer it LOOKS really pretty. Who knows how it actually plays, it being Game Freak I’m not holding my breath but so far, visually, it is impressive so then the question is; Why do your Pokemon games run like shit? Not really the point of my post I guess, back on track, back on track.
So. I want to explore, I want to do puzzles/riddles, I want to search for rare Pokemon and battle only to defend myself. I’ve had this thought since they introduced raid battles in the mainline Pokemon games that a game could really work with a JRPG style of controlling at least three Pokemon at a time. I think they introduced triple battles in Black and White and it kind of works the way I want but not really. It has been understood that the “rules” of Pokemon battles is one on one fights because that’s what’s fair but if I’m in the wilderness searching for rare and powerful wild Pokemon then the rules don’t apply. The rules are fine for someone trying to take on the Pokemon League, I don’t want to do that anymore. The trouble with raid battles is you are relying on randos to succeed. People are unpredictable and not reliable for the most part, especially in this format because you can’t communicate with them in anyway. You can’t even decide beforehand who is going to bring what Pokemon, you are just relying on blind faith that they’ll bring the right ‘mons for the job. I like the idea of making your own kind of team for a single player game. There are so many Pokemon at this point they can certainly have a plethora of each “category” and still not use every monster they’ve ever made. I can see Pokemon being divided into “classes” like tanks, off-tank, DPS, status ailments, defensive and/or healers and again, with the amount of Pokemon there would certainly be Pokemon that could fulfill a couple roles if you so choose. Oh god, I just had a vision of talent trees where you could make a Pokemon be either a tank or a DPS. *shudder* But yeah, you can have a tankier Pokemon up front to soak damage, then another for DPS and then one that puts up barriers to help soften the blows. If your tank faints you can put in the “off-tank” to try and get through the rest of the battle. I can see if you’re really trying to catch a certain Pokemon that you have something like Butterfree out who is just spamming paralysis and sleep while being healed by a Clefairy or something. Like, just to use some of my team for examples, Empoleon would be my tank Pokemon, Scizor would be my DPS and Whimsicott would be out back casting tailwind and doing her own poke damage. I used to have Espeon and Bellossom play off each other, Espeon would cast Sunny Day so Bellossom could cast Solar Beam and then Espeon could cast Morning Sun to heal herself more with Sunny Day being active. For me, I never saw this much of the synergy Pokemon moves can have because they only last for a few turns so if you really wanted to you’d have to waste a turn to switch Pokemon to capitalize on your moves but I don’t want to do that. Expedition 33 has a lot of moves that synergize between the characters. I don’t quite want E33’s combat for a Pokemon game, probably everything aside from the parry and dodging system but hey, if they want to completely copy E33, I wouldn’t be too mad, it would just mean maybe you wouldn’t need a healer Pokemon in the group. Or they could heal outside of combat and I know ZA has a dodging kind of thing going on but it looks awkward.
The things I love about older Pokemon games is exploring zones. Be it caves, snowy mountains, the safari zone, not deserts (idk why), forest, I just enjoy going in these places, seeing something on the other side of the trees and try to figure out how to get there. I used to think of these things as puzzles but while, I wouldn’t call it “research” but, looking around online I saw people throw around the word “maze” and I was like yeah, okay. So I like these mazes in Pokemon games. It’s just the way my brain works. I can remember where stupid shit is in Metroidvania’s and back track to find the door that I needed to use this item on or whatever, I enjoy that shit, using HMs to go deeper into caves by moving boulders, further in forests by cutting trees. You still did that in Legends Arceus to an extent, I don’t remember if there was a certain point you unlocked the abilities but you could break rocks by throwing a Pokemon at it, you still had to get to further in the game before you could fly or surf. I remember in ReCore (remember that game, no? Yeah no one does) you had a group of robots but could only bring one or two at a time? And certain puzzles could only be done with certain robots so if you didn’t have the right bot you had to remember where the thing was and to bring that robot there, it wasn’t great. I understand Legends Arceus’ reasons for being able to summon certain Pokemon to perform certain, fast travel tasks, but I would like for my team to be responsible for exploring the wilds. I mean most Pokemon could cut down trees with certain moves, some could move boulders with psychic powers, and you could ride or be pulled by any water Pokemon. Just have a little Poliwag pull you on a boogie board, it’s fine. I think using a flute or something to summon a Pokemon to fly you around would be fine as well, I enjoyed flying and exploring in Alpha Sapphire.
One
of my favorite things to do is search for rare/legendary Pokemon that hide in
the backs of caves and such. Even searching for Lapras in
I guess that’s overall it. Now that I’ve thought about it here I really would just love a Pokemon version of Expedition 33. The combat is good, exploration in the overworld is fine. It’s similar to Pokemon where you have to find certain objects or certain NPCs to break rocks or surf or fly and legendary Pokemon fights would be great if they were on a similar, maybe smaller scale as E33’s bosses. Some of their boss fights are ridiculous. There could be some ne’er-do-wells along the way, maybe they’re hurting Pokemon or destroying the land and it’s your job to keep the balance (kind of think taking down legendary beings might upset the balance more, unless they are the cause of the imbalance, or maybe you’re the bad guy! D: ) Maybe the bad guys have two or three or five Pokemon at a time cause they’re jackasses. Break out the ol’ earthquake. I think I would still prefer not parrying or dodging, or like it could be random like Pokemon is. Sometimes the ‘mon does dodge on their own so if that’s the case that’s fine. I would just like there to be almost be a NEED to have a healer Pokemon in the group. I mean, you can heal in E33 but because of the parry/dodge mechanic you’re kind of expected not to but you can get through the game without parrying and dodging... I don’t know. Maybe it’s more the pictos fault for the not healing, there’s some powerful pictos that buff you but make it so you can’t be healed because they expect you to be good at parrying… Just don’t put pictos in my Pokemon game, you can have the parry/dodge mechanic if you want but still have a healer when you screw up. Yup, alright. Expedition 33 version of Pokemon pretty please. I’ll just tuck that right next to my Waifu Division and Power Rangers Warriors games on my imaginary shelf where good things go that don’t actually exist. It is weird that Hyrule Warriors started me on this thought process only to arrive at Expedition 33.
So in short; I want to have three Pokemon out at a time like JRPGs do, I want the Pokemon to have different classes, I want to explore mazes like Expedition 33, do puzzles like The Legend of Zelda and I want to have epic boss fights with legendary and mythical Pokemon. I think that’s pretty much it, maybe I’ll make a future post about putting a Pokemon skin over Expedition 33, more so than I already have. What do you think? Do you have any input? Let me know below and I’ll be back sometime, bye-bye!
